Do you try to please everyone?

I had this habit of trying to be good to every one I come across.

Which is good, because being nice to people is not bad for relationships.

But the problem is when you start to please them in your mind.

What’s that? Let me explain.

You are now worried about what they think about you.

You are now worried about if you decline their invitation, they will feel bad.

You are now worried about what they will think if you post something, express a controversial view.

This is what happens to a lot of people and they live their lives with other people’s weight inside their heads.

I recently read a very nice book on this “The Let Them Theory” by Mel Robbins.

It’s a simple concept but profound. It basically harps on two things.

  • Let Them – means let other people’s opinions, thoughts about you not bother you.
  • Let Me – you take responsibility of what you want and what is good for you.

When it comes to money, this is true as well.

Many of the times, we are so weighted by other people’s opinions about our financial status that we forget how they are impacting our own happiness.

  • We compare our possessions (living with the Joneses).
  • We fall for the marketing of financial products (in a way worried the salesman will think I am not smart).
  • We are afraid to the tell the realtor that this is my budget, since the lender told her I can afford a lot more.
  • We buy random investments because the world is going crazy about it. (FOMO).

The result? Less liquidity, less flexibility, losses, missed goals and mental agony about financial decisions down the road.

On the other hand, when you practice “Let Them, Let Me”, you take control.

  • Let Me decide how much home is enough.
  • Let Me decide what car I want to drive.
  • Let Me decide how much cash I want to keep. (not 3-6 months of expenses)
  • Let Me decide what investments I will buy. (100% crypto is also okay, if you want).
  • Let Me decide what profession I will be, even if earns a little less but keeps me happy.

Let Me choose my finances to make Me happy.

Let Them run the rat race to accumulate millions and be unhappy in the process.

My process for “Let Them, Let Me” is very simple.

  • Financial Reboot – awareness of your finances today, no judgement.
  • Financial Goals – a complete Let Me approach, planning for your own goals.
  • Financial Flow – automated budget, which says “Let Them” everyday.
  • Financial Growth – Let Them. Let Me Grow to my own dreams.

Do not worry what the media or other people say about Financial Freedom, Retirement plans, Rich Life, Millionaire status …

Let Them.

  • Let Me define my financial freedom
  • Let Me define my ideal retired life
  • Let Me define my rich life
  • Let Me decide if I want to retire a millionaire
